GAlerts has a build-in checking service, who uses the build-in position system of your smartphone to track your current position, and notify you when you enter in some of your GAlert's area. GAlerts can work without GPS, but if you turn on your GPS, you will get better results.
The checking service needs to be started from the application, and it will be running in background even if you are not using GAlerts a, so just start the service and use any other application.
